The northwestern Romanian region of Maramures is home to many villages where century-old traditions are still part of daily life. The inhabitants of this area have preserved, to an amazing extent, the rural culture and crafts of their Dacian ancestors.

Places visited:

Cluj Napoca: Ethnographic museum of Transylvania, Old Town.

Gutai mountainsCreasta Cocoşului (Cock’s comb)
an impressive craggy volcanic rock formation.

Sighetu Marmației : Maramures Village Museum,
Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance

Rodna Mountains : Prislop pass, Horses’ Waterfall, Prislop monastery

Sapanta: Merry cemetery, Peri Monastery

Small villages and old wooden churches: Budesti, Sarbi, Breb, Desesti, Hoteni, Botiza, Ieud, Poienile Izei, Feresti, Peri, Barsana, Rogoz, Sapanta, Viseul de sus…

A superb location. A cosy wooden lodge in the midst of beautiful farmlands, near a charming traditional village. The hosts are extremely friendly and hospitable (and cook great meals!). My rating: 5 stars.

Good location, close to monastery and merry cemetery. My rating: 4 stars.

Casa Chira, Viseul de sus.
Large room, with a kitchen and BBQ facility. Very clean and tidy. My rating: 4 stars.
